TITLE : A Cluster Design
ARCHITECT : Hiren Patel, Ahmedabad.

The Sambhav bungalows, a cluster of three luxurious residences owned by Vadodaria brothers is situated within a plot of 3,600 square yards, in a relatively dense urban fabric. The plot size though not large, has a pervading presence of greenery incorporated in to the layout design. The design was formulated strictly on the parameters of vastushastra underlaid by the clients, who had always appreciated the willingness of the architect to subordinate his architectural ideals to their needs. The bungalows are an _expression of the personality of their owners-expansive, informal yet simple. The house has a prevailing sense of simplicity and craftsmanship. The undulating pathway, paved in terracotta, connecting the three residences within the gardenscape reflects an artful composition of the object and environment (the house and the landscape). The plan opens onto the greens on all sides visually linking all the residences. The absence of a compound wall and the underlay of green lawns, that stretched across the common spaces emphasizes this. The main entrance is highlighted by a solid pitched roof entrance portico clad in one inch square, cyan coloured ceramic tiles. This pitched roof above the puja room appears sculpted in to this staggering composition of cubical masses and heightens the play of forms.

The plan encompasses terraces at various levels; there is spatial clarity in volumes and unity that binds the many masses of the house together. The use of heavy masonry walls to shield the sunlight and emphasize massing, resonates with the vernacular architecture. Italian marble flooring distinguishes the living, family and dining from the rest of the rooms which have polished granamite in plain shades.
